Upgrade Your Trimming Like This.
As a craftsman, as a trimmer, you always need to step up your game to be ahead from others. You need to perform better and maintain your value. However, things is not so easy right?
Don’t worry, here are some of the tips for you that can make you improve the quality of our work.
1. Glueing the leather and sponge is a No.
Due to the way the leather is stored, it needs to be flattened, stretched out, and worked on to get its wrinkles off. Gluing the leather and the sponge together will let the wrinkle remain.
Let the leather and sponge work independently. You can cut the sponge in a larger size, sew the leather and the sponge then cut off the excessive part.
2. Template marking.
Pin or attach a small piece of material to each panel that you are marking so that you can know if it fits well because pinning it is like how you fit it on the seat. You are recommended to make a lot of markings, pin it nicely and firmly but not too tightly.
Some seat parts that have been used for too long can be stretched and hardened so if you were to try and lay the panel flat to get an accurate shape or measurement, it would be difficult, so the marking method will help you better.
3. Top stitching and french seams
Stitching top stitch too far away from the seam will make it look untidy and might cause ripples. Keep the stitch close to the seam. It would look neater and cause fewer problems.
You are also recommended to use the same color thread for your bobbin thread as the material you are sewing to.
4. Piping sewing.
Try to sew either from the front or the side of the border or the piece without pleats first when swing piping. This will prevent rippling.
“For example, say you have a bench seat with pleats front to back that are each 2-inches wide going along the length of the seat. If you sew the piping to the pleated piece first, you’re attaching it to all those ups and downs, which essentially lengthens your piping and causes it to ripple. However, if you sew the piping to the box border first and then sew it to the pleats, it will sort of float over the pleats and keep the piping tight and looking good”. - Brent Parker.
5. Search for ideas.
You cannot always be doing the same thing, and of course, you cannot copy others, but you can get ideas when you look at others or check out what other people are doing. We will never know how well we are doing if we did not compare or look at how others are doing.
If you saw someone that is doing better, don’t be shy, you can as them. Ask them respectfully and you’ll see some are willing to share their knowledge. You can even offer an exchange of knowledge and information to create a win-win situation.
Look up to the internet and magazines too. Internet is a very good source to get more knowledge regarding automotive trimming. You can see others sharing their knowledge and even tutorial videos. Even online courses about trimming
“Access to computers and the Internet has become a basic need for education in our society.” - Kent Conrad
6. Attentive to small details
Being a trimmer, you really cannot miss out or ignore the small things. They can make a big difference. For example, you need to use the right tools, the right thread, the right stitching length, the thread’s tension, and use the right sewing needle because everything will make a difference.
Always look out for those small things. Never ignore them and think that they are not important.
There you go, guys. Those are some of the tips that we think can help you improve your trimming. We hope it can help you and if you know any other tips that can help others, why not share them with us in the comment section. We can all benefit from it together.
