Leather’s Grades That You Don’t Know
Leather comes in different grades and qualities. If you ever went to a shop and the seller telling you “this one good quality”, “that one, very good” or “this, very nice”, now u can see the leather and its label before deciding to trust the seller or not.
It is not very hard actually. Here are some basic bits of knowledge that will help you in determining the grades of the leather.
1. Full grain leather
Full-grain leather is the highest quality leather that one can get. They are made from the hide’s top layer and since its thickness and “unpolished” nature, its natural imperfection still remains and is sometimes, visible.
A full-grain leather also means that the hide still has its original softness, thickness, and breathability and this is why full-grain leather is characterized by its smooth, luxurious look and feel.
2. Top grain leather
The top grain leather is the second-highest quality of leather. They are usually used on high-end leather products like wallets and bags. All the imperfections are removed with a split later. Since there is a split layer, the leather will become thinner and it also becomes easier to work on for the craftsman or the upholsterer. They are also more expensive.
The top grain leather is sanded and given a layered finish which makes the leather less breathability but it benefits in the protection against spills and stains.

3. Genuine grain leather
Genuine grain leather is the type of leather that is considered third-grade leather. They are made from the remains of the top later and are then covered in an artificial grain. To give it a more natural look, the genuine grain leather is also sprayed with dye. Due to its complexity, this leather requires experienced leatherworkers to ensure the leather’s natural aesthetic and functionality remain. This type of leather also costs lesser than top grain leather.
4. Bonded leather
Bonded leather is the lowest grade and quality leather. They are made from the leftover of all the leather hides then bonded together through fiber or latex sheets. The pieces of the leftover leather will determine the bonded leather’s visual as well as its texture.
