Napa leather? What is that?
Do you know what is a napa leather or have you ever heard of it? Napa leather or sometimes just being called as napa is the other term or name for soft smooth leather from the hides coming from different animals.
Napa leather is a full grain smooth leather. Originally, napa leather is the name for glove or clothing leather which was named after a location, Napa Valley, California, USA. This napa leather was known for its particular smooth and supple softness.
Now, in current time, the term napa leather has become a collective term for smooth leather that came from all animal species and for different uses. The term “napa” was used by manufacturers to describe the “good quality” or of a “special softness”.
Actually, well, since the term for napa is not clearly defined or standardised, one cannot rely that if a leather is called napa leather, it means that it is actually good quality or it is a soft leather.
“Napa” , if it were to be used for its term, means soft leather. Even leather products like belts, shoes or bags with other looks like crocodile skin looks that were made of embossed cow leather are sold as embossed napa. But if the products, like belts, shoes or bags that are made with other leather like crocodile leather which are solid leather and not for softness, that does not mean that it is bad quality, it is just wrongly described of its leather type. It doesn’t mean that if it is hard, it is bad quality.
Do you know that there is also another term called “sanded napa”? It is also linked to napa leather. Sanded napa means smooth leather which the surface has been sanded before colouring. They are from poorer quality leather.
So what is the difference of another word “nappa”, yes got 2 “P”. In english language, napa is written with only 1 “P”. Nappa leather, 2 “P”, is used for soft imitation leather. In other countries like Portugal, Napa means artificial leather, but in Germany, Nappa means the same as Napa in the English language. So.. make sure to clarify it no matter where you are.
